Frequently asked questions

Does it really play all night?

Yes. There is no time limit. NightLong generates sound as it plays rather than playing a recording, so there is no file to reach the end of. It stops when you stop it, or when a sleep timer you set expires. The timer defaults to Until I stop it.

Does it need an internet connection?

No, and it never uses one. The app makes no network requests at all. It works in aeroplane mode, out of signal range, and on a device that has never been online.

The sound stopped during the night

A few things can legitimately stop playback:

  • A sleep timer was set. Tap the chip at the top right and choose "Until I stop it".
  • Headphones or a speaker disconnected. NightLong pauses rather than suddenly playing out loud through the phone speaker, which would wake the room. Press play to resume.
  • Another app took over audio, such as answering a call. NightLong resumes automatically when the interruption ends and the system allows it.
  • Low Power Mode can make iOS more aggressive about suspending apps. If playback stops overnight repeatedly, try turning Low Power Mode off at bedtime.

Which sound should I use?

  • Pink is the usual starting point. It is the most balanced.
  • Brown if you find hiss harsh and want something deep and soft.
  • White if you need the strongest masking of outside noise.
  • Blue or Violet are commonly used for tinnitus, as they cover high ringing.
  • Cabin is the most effective at masking traffic and voices through a wall.

All twelve sounds are matched to the same perceived loudness, so you can change between them in the dark without being startled.

Can I use it with a partner in the room?

Yes. Volume is adjustable in the app and independently with the device volume buttons. NightLong keeps playing when the silent switch is on.

Does it drain the battery?

It is light, but it is still audio playing all night, so use a charger if you can. The app asks iOS for large audio buffers specifically to reduce how often the processor has to wake up.

Will it wake me with an ad or a notification?

No. There are no ads, no notifications, and no account. Nothing is collected either — see the Privacy Policy for details.

It is playing but I cannot hear anything

  • Check the device volume and that the volume slider in the app is not at zero.
  • Check that audio is not routed to a Bluetooth device in another room.
  • Check Control Center to see which output is selected.

Reporting a problem

Email simon@simonholman.dev with your device model and iOS version, and what happened. If sound stopped overnight, mentioning whether Low Power Mode was on is genuinely useful.
